While there, Claire decides to tell everything she did not tell her about her father that a man named Jamie Fraser, a Highland warrior from 18th century was, in fact, her biological father.

The previous books ends with Claire and her, now adult, daughter Brianna, visiting Brianna’s father (and one of the main protagonists from the previous two sequels) grave. She is able to travel through time by visiting a certain location (a stone circle), an ancient place, which allows its users to travel through time in order to reach certain era. Most of her quests occur during her time travel. This book, as well as the previous two, follows a woman named Claire Randall and her quests and adventures.

It follows the events which occurred immediately after the end of the second book. This novel is a direct sequel to the second novel, Dragonfly in Amber.
